Virginia State and Federal Tax Credits for Electric Vehicles
Drivers who currently own or who intend to purchase an electric vehicle (EV) in the near future should be aware that they may qualify for several tax credits and incentives at both the state and federal level. These benefits have several qualifications, so be sure to review the stipulations and guidelines carefully to see if they apply to you and your vehicle. You may also contact the staff at Pohanka Lexus for clarification if you still have questions.
Federal Tax Credits
To begin, the federal government is offering several tax incentives for drivers of EVs. This credit may range from $2,500 to $7,500, and is intended to make it more affordable to manage the up-front costs of these vehicles. However, you should be aware of the following requirements. First, the amount you receive will depend upon your vehicle’s gross weight and battery capacity, and your EV must have at least five kilowatt-hours of capacity and use an external energy source to recharge the battery. Please note that once 200,000 qualifying vehicles are sold in the United States by a given manufacturer, this incentive will be phased out.
Virginia Tax Credits
In addition to the benefits provided at the federal level, the Commonwealth of Virginia also offers several incentives if you own an EV. Residents of Loudon and Arlington counties may qualify for a reduced personal property tax, while those who charge their vehicle at home can take advantage of discounted electricity rates during off-peak hours. Furthermore, vehicles that display a Virginia Clean Special Fuel license are permitted to use Virginia High Occupancy Vehicle lanes, provided they adhere to certain specifications.
