The largest SUVs seat up to eight individuals, so they are of course targeted toward families and those who like to take the neighbors on a trip through the boondocks. For many, the paramount consideration is ground clearance, big tires, excellent suspension, and overall rugged build. The 2018 Lexus LX, more commercially known as the LX 570, delivers where most other big SUVs fall short, namely its off-road capabilities.
The prime competitor in this segment is the Toyota Land Cruiser. In some ways, the two models don't seem to differ much because they are built around the same chassis design. However, the LX 570 comes with different exterior styling, and the interior is a definite step above the 2018 Toyota Land Cruiser in terms of materials quality and total refinement. Both score high with consumers, but the LX from Lexus offers a better list of standard high-tech features, and its powertrain, though similar to that found on the Land Cruiser, actually delivers slightly better performance.
Performance
There's only one 2018 Lexus LX trim available, known as the LX 570. The engine is a 5.7L V8 that produces a total of 383 horsepower and 403 lb-ft of torque. Four-wheel drive is the only option, not that buyers would expect anything else. Transmission is eight-speed automatic. The adaptive suspension system includes a load-leveling, weight distribution feature that certainly helps when hauling a lot of passengers and cargo over uneven surfaces. Standard wheel size is 20 inches, and there's a Crawl Control feature that acts as a low-speed cruise control, another addition that helps when traveling off-road. The 2018 Toyota Land Cruiser is built similarly and actually has better ground clearance, but the engine and drive system, although basically the same as what is found on the LX 570, doesn't work quite as well all through the gear ranges. Some drivers feel that the Multi-Terrain Select doesn't do much at all.
Off-Road Capabilities
Although the 2018 Lexus LX 570 has a lower ground clearance, its perfect weight distribution is better than that experienced on the Toyota Land Cruiser. The driver feels in complete control when accelerating, braking, or performing hard turns at low speeds. The traction management system is unrivaled. Being able to adjust the suspension easily actually outweighs the problem of lower ground clearance. This isn't the most comfortable vehicle for traveling at high speeds on winding roads, but it brings total peace of mind when tackling the slower-speed tough jobs. Some drivers feel that the 2018 Toyota Land Cruiser has too many conflicting off-road performance systems. The Crawl Control interferes with the Multi-Terrain Select, and some drivers think that the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) is all wrong when certain drive modes are engaged.
Features
There isn't a lot here that differentiates the 2018 Lexus LX 570 from the Toyota Land Cruiser. However, the standard 12.3-inch screen display on the LX 570 is much larger and more complex than what is found on the Land Cruiser. Both models have multi-view parking cameras, but the LX 570 also has an automatic parking system. The LX 570 also offers several package options relating to the infotainment systems, something buyers don't get with the purchase of the Land Cruiser. A stand-alone option of a rear entertainment system is the only real high-tech option available.
