The 2018 Lexus NX updates the look, luxury and capability of its well-liked predecessor. New standards are added to the list of amenities, dash technologies, and, most importantly, safety systems.

Ready for action, the new NX looks a bit more aggressive. It may be the new carved-out surrounds for the foglights, the longer L-shaped taillights, or the new triple projector headlamps. The bumpers are reshaped, and the spindle grille is reflected in the rear design as well. The total effect is sleeker and more substantial for this small crossover.

For 2018, Lexus engineers wanted to enhance NX drivability. Suspension elements were retuned to create a better response, particularly for cornering. The ride is smoothed by new shock absorbers and NX adaptive variable suspension technology. It adjusts instantaneously to road conditions with up to 650 potential adjustments. The turbo inline-four engine can generate 235 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. If you prefer, you can choose a hybrid powertrain that utilizes a gas turbo and an electric motor. This engine is rated for 194 horsepower and 31 mpg highway.

Matching the interior to the new exterior was the job of Lexus designers. They re-envisioned the cabin, focusing the cockpit area on the driver’s needs. A more luxurious feel is accomplished with the use of higher quality materials and a special attention to detail. As you climb the trim ladder, you will find more amenities. Luxury fabrics in leatherette and leather are especially soft and pliable. Satin finishes and other trim elements look and feel upscale. The utility has improved as well with new features such a foot-operated rear hatch, a welcome addition for busy owners. The rear seat can be split-folded by hand or with the help of a power mechanism.

The 2018 Lexus NX has its biggest infotainment screen ever. The new one is 10.3 inches, making it easier to see. The system is easy to understand, and Lexus has simplified operations overall. For instance, four switches have replaced the previous multi-button climate controls. Designers enlarged the remote touch interface pad, giving you more space for easier use. The palm rest now offers more wrist comfort. Larger smartphones can now find a home in the bigger cubby. Even the USB ports were moved to a more optimized position for the driver. Adding value, a wireless charger is now part of the NX package.

Leading the way toward a safer future, Lexus NX editions will have more standard crash avoidance features than their rivals. Automation is easier with the radar-enabled system on the Lexus NX. The pre-collision system watches and warns, even automatically braking if the driver doesn’t respond quickly enough. Dynamic radar cruise control regulates the speed and may brake the car to avoid trouble. A lane departure alert helps the driver maintain the proper path for the SUV. High beams can raise or lower in response to the SUV’s built-in sensors. The addition of these standard safety systems makes the NX an even better value package.
