One of the great selling points of Lexus vehicles is their luxurious design and long list of convenience features at a price that beats out most of the upscale competition. One thinks of Mercedes-Benz and BMW as the premier luxury crossover and SUV manufacturers, but one test drive of the 2018 Lexus RX — more specifically branded the RX 350 — will convince most buyers that a very nice family hauler doesn't have to come with a BMW price tag.

The 2018 BMW X5 is certainly a top crossover pick, but the sticker price doesn't seem to match the performance, interior, or overall value when compared to the Lexus RX 350. The RX 350 has a roomier interior, and it's just as laden with the most desired features as the more expensive X5 model from BMW.

Interior Design

One area where the 2018 Lexus RX 350 bests the BMW X5 is the interior layout. Even though this is considered a five-passenger transport, the cabin is airy, and there's plenty of legroom for everyone. The newly introduced 350 L adds a third row of seats but doesn't skimp on the overall comfort for passengers. Rear privacy glass is standard on the RX 350, and the front seats are power-adjustable. Simulated leather is standard on the base model, and the F Sport version gets full leather upholstery. The 2018 BMW X5 has a very nice interior as well, but the spacing is a bit tighter. It comes with three rows of seats, and the rear passengers will suffer a bit when it comes to legroom and elbow room. Some folks don't like vinyl upholstery, but that's all that's offered on the base trim.

Standard Features

Every 2018 Lexus RX 350 is equipped with automatic LED headlights, a power liftgate, a power-adjustable steering wheel, dual-zone climate control, and a rear cargo cover. High-tech goodies include a rearview camera, Bluetooth, an 8-inch screen display, and nine-speaker sound system. The audio system can be upgraded through the purchase of the Navigation package. The F-Sport is only a little bit more expensive but adds on 20-inch wheels, heated and ventilated front sport seats, transmission paddle shifters, and sporty instrument gauge styling. The 2018 BMW X5 comes with most of these as well, but each trim costs more than the corresponding version of the RX 350. The BMW iDrive interface can be clumsy to use and isn't really more advanced than the infotainment system found on the more affordable RX 350.

Safety And Security

Both the 2018 Lexus RX 350 and BMW X5 come with a full set of airbags including front, front-side, and side-curtain bags, and both have an anchor and tether system for child safety seats. However, all 2018 Lexus RX 350 and 350 models include adaptive cruise control and the Safety Connect emergency systems. They also feature the full driver aid package including lane departure warning and forward collision alert with automatic braking. These features are not standard on the entry-level versions of the 2018 BMW X5, and the base trim cannot even be equipped with these driver aids as a stand-alone option.
