The 2019 Lexus receives welcome upgrades to the powertrain, interior, and instrumentation. The result is an even more appealing model. The recently unveiled 2019 Toyota Avalon is a worthy competitor, but upon close inspection, it becomes clear that the folks at Lexus have made the wise decision to upgrade in all the right places. To learn more about the new ES model, check out the facts listed below.

Powertrain Upgrades

The outgoing 2018 ES competed well in this area. However, the new 2019 model comes with:

  • • A 34-horsepower increase over last year
  • • An improved fuel delivery system
  • • A new eight-speed automatic transmission

This increase in total power should please drivers who have been a bit perturbed by the hesitant 3.5L V6 on the 2018 model. The new fuel delivery system really makes for a noticeable power boost in the lower gears, and fuel mileage is also improved. The eight-speed automatic transmission is also a welcome change. There's also an improved suspension system that will result in an even more comfortable ride. The 2019 Toyota Avalon gets a minor suspension upgrade as well, but the engine and powertrain remain essentially the same as last year's version.

Interior Refinements

The 2019 Lexus ES is slightly larger and wider than the outgoing 2018 model, and this results in:

  • • More legroom than ever before
  • • Wider, more comfortable seats
  • • Better outward visibility
  • • More overall interior volume

The new 2019 model promises even more legroom and elbow room, particularly in the rear. The seats are generously dimensioned, and drivers will have no trouble adjusting the power seats. Even though the 2019 model is available only in a single trim, there are many package add-on possibilities, and some include wonderful interior trim accents. The 2019 Toyota Avalon has a rather roomy interior, but some of the cubbies and pockets are a bit small, and they aren't as functionally placed as the Lexus ES'. Also, the various trims available have extremely varying and confusing lists of standard interior features.

New Instrumentation

The 2019 Lexus ES comes with a new forward instrument panel layout featuring:

  • • A new dash design
  • • A crisp 12.3-inch display screen
  • • A functionally laid-out instrument cluster of knobs and button
  • • Smartphone app integration

These are all welcome changes, making the driver and front passenger seating area much more high-tech friendly. The Remote Touch interface located near the gear shifter is easy to use, and there are more personalization settings on the 2019 model than in previous years. The 2019 Toyota Avalon doesn't get much of an instrumentation upgrade, although it's only fair to mention that Apple CarPlay is now included.
