The ES and the GS were two of the first vehicles from Lexus, the luxury brand of Toyota. And over the years, they have firmly represented the division’s midsize sedans. While the ES, which was launched in 1989—the same year Lexus was founded—actually grew from being a compact executive car to a midsize one in 1991, the GS—which made its debut that same year—has always been Lexus’s sport-oriented midsize four-door ride. The 2019 model year welcomed the ES’s seventh generation while the GS sticks with its fourth-gen model for 2018. Either nameplate, though, provides customers several qualities. Here are three of them:
Performance
Thanks to a brand-new design, the 2019 Lexus ES is the recipient of a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 that has an output of 302 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. Thanks to its revised fuel-injection system, this engine produces 34 more horsepower and 19 more lb-ft of torque than the outgoing sixth-gen model. This V6, which is codenamed 2GR-FKS, is also on the 2018 Lexus GS, where it produces 311 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque. For even more performance, you can go with the track-proven, road-ready GS F model, which uses a 5.0-liter V8 (2UR-GSE) that pumps out 467 horsepower and 389 lb-ft of torque. With either vehicle, you will never have a problem going from 0 to 60 mph, merging into traffic, or making that lane switch in a hurry.
Interior Spaciousness
The 2019 Lexus ES is designed to be larger than the fifth-generation model that it replaces. As a result, it has one of the largest trunks in the midsize luxury sedan class, with a cargo volume measured at 16.7 cubic feet. It is only slightly smaller than that of the 2018 Lexus GS, which yields 15.9 cubic feet; you could probably fit one additional grocery bag in the GS. Otherwise, both provide ample space for your luggage and other belongings. And that’s in addition to cavernous cabins, which give up to five occupants more than enough space to stretch out their limbs and feel comfortable on long trips.
Premium Quality
Whether you go with the 2019 Lexus ES or the 2018 Lexus GS, expect the vehicle to be loaded with premium features. On the ES, features like an 8-inch display, Bluetooth® technology for hands-free phone calling and audio streaming, smartphone integration, Amazon Alexa virtual assistance, a Wi-Fi hotspot powered by Verizon, and a 10-speaker 296-watt Pioneer audio system are standard.
