Customers do not need to spend an awful amount of dollars to get into a luxury-branded vehicle. That’s the purpose that the ES and IS serve: affordable premium quality. The ES arrived as one of the cars to launch the Lexus brand in 1989, and it occupied the entry-level luxury vehicle segment of the marquee’s lineup until the IS arrived in 1999. Today, both the ES and IS comprise the least expensive Lexus cars around. Now, the ES might be making that transition into its seventh production cycle with the 2019 model year while the IS goes deeper into its third. But both cars still have a bit more in common than just their relatively low price points.

Performance

With the complete redesign, the 2019 Lexus ES certainly gets a boost in the drivetrain department. Although the longstanding upper-level engine—a 3.5-liter V6—is back, it now produces 302 horsepower and 267 lb-ft of torque. That’s 34 more horsepower and 19 more lb-ft of torque than what the 3.5-liter V6—now codenamed 2GR-FKS—produced for the sixth-gen ES model. The 2GR-FKS was introduced earlier on the 2018 Lexus IS, which gets 260 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. Both vehicles have more than enough output to accelerate, merge into traffic, or switch lanes. And for a tighter—and thus, sportier—driving feel, there’s always the hawkish F Sport to go with.

Appearance

The jackets that Lexus vehicles have definitely evolved over the past few years. No longer satisfied with ho-hum designs, Toyota Motor Corporation, Lexus’s parent company, has completely radicalized the sheet metal of its luxury division. The 2019 Lexus ES and 2018 Lexus IS are certainly no exceptions—with their huge trapezoidal grilles, slashing headlamps, pointed edges, and sporty profiles. No matter what car you go with, you will be driving in a vehicle that exudes visual confidence and aggressiveness. And for even more sportiness, you can go with the F Sport variant, which heightens the aesthetics with model-specific alloy wheels, a rear spoiler, dark-finished taillights, distinctively styled lower fascias, and a blacked-out mesh grille.

Cabin and Seating Comfort

Both five-seaters, the 2019 Lexus ES and the 2018 Lexus IS are designed to maximize occupant comfort. All seats have synthetic leather, with the choice of upgrading to full leather or semi-aniline leather seats. Also standard are front-seat power adjustability with power lumbar support on the driver’s side. Both front and rear provide ample legroom. Cabin noise is virtually non-existent. And the seat, pedals, and steering wheel are angled and positioned to provide a more dynamic driving experience without sacrificing comfort or visibility.
